5 Ways to Retain Warehouse Employees

5 Ways to Retain Warehouse Employees

Posted

Traditionally, warehouses have experienced a high level of turnover with their warehouse employees. However, as manufacturing continues to be a core element of the American economy, these workers are more important than ever. Here are five ways you can retain your warehouse employees without compromising your budget.

Incentive Programs

When you think of company incentives, chances are you might see dollar signs. However, there are a variety of other incentive opportunities that can increase employee satisfaction without dipping into your revenue. For instance, for top performers you can offer benefits such as a flexible work week, a day off outside of their annual leave, and small rewards like gift cards or movie tickets.

Company Culture

A key element of employee retention is creating a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere in the workplace. A relaxed company culture can do wonders for morale, so make a point of hosting company events such as pot lucks, baseball games, or trivia contests. Not only will these events improve your staff's ability to work together, but they'll also increase their satisfaction in the workplace.

Employee Recognition

While it may seem like a dated practice, “Employee of the Month” recognition can actually go a long way with your staff. Choose employees with an exemplary performance or attendance record, or those who display other ideal personality or professional traits. Once you've chosen the staff member, you can opt for framed staff photos on the wall, a reserved parking spot, or simply a congratulatory mention in the weekly or monthly update emails.

Communication

Of course, retaining employees goes further than rewarding them for good behavior. You have to make their work easy for them, and a lack of communication can be very frustrating in the workplace. Be sure to offer meaningful, constructive feedback to your warehouse employees, and ensure that they know what's expected of them in their positions. This will provide them with a sense of security and a clear way to keep an eye on their performance.

Open Door Policies

Communication goes both ways, however. You should implement an open door policy that allows your staff to come to you with feedback and suggestions. Listen to their ideas, and let them know that their insight is invaluable to the company. Implement their suggestions when they improve workflow, and listen to their concerns with a thoughtful, open mind. Your warehouse workers will feel appreciated and confident in their role within the company.
