Need a New Warehouse Manager? What to Consider Before Promoting Within.

When you have an opening for a warehouse manager position, it may be tempting to extend a job offer to a warehouse team member who has demonstrated strong leadership skills. While promoting from within can save you some money on your search for the ideal candidate, it can also have some negative long-term repercussions for the company. Here's why.

Jealousy Among Warehouse Team Members

If one of your newer and stronger team members shows interest in a warehouse manager position, there may be some jealousy among employees who have been with the company for some time and have never been promoted. Others may be jealous of someone who they may feel is not deserving of a promotion or if they feel the individual is not as qualified as they are for the same position they showed interest in or have applied for at some point.

Difficult to Earn Respect of All Employees

Managers must maintain strong boundaries and good communication skills in order to successfully lead their team. If an employee who gets promoted to a managerial role did not get along well with other employees or, in some cases, was overly social and friendly with everyone, it may be difficult for the candidate to earn the respect of other employees when this person assumes a leadership position. It will also be difficult for employees to respect an individual who was known for breaking and bending the company rules since that individual is now required to take on more responsibility.

Lack of Fresh Ideas and Perspectives

While it can help to promote from within so you don't have to train and groom the candidate for the managerial role, the individual may not be able to bring any fresh ideas or new perspectives to the table. You may fare better with someone who has worked at a similar company or has extensive managerial experience so they can quickly solve problems and tackle challenges with a fresh perspective.
