11 Workplace Safety Essentials

An employers number one concern is the safety of its employees in the workplace. Staying safe is no easy task. There are lots of factors in keeping a safe work environment so all employees can work productively and efficiently. Injuries on the job can cost a company a large amount of money because not only do you lose an employee but also your insurance rates and workers' compensation premiums could increase. Furthermore, there may be a chance of a possible lawsuit. Make safety your top concern and employees can work with more focus.

Here are 11 simple ways to improve on workplace safety.

1. Clean Workspace

Maintain a clean workspace .  Tying up cords and having designated areas for belongings are simple and easy ways to keep a work area safe. A large percentage of workers who get hurt on the job could have prevented their accidents by cleaning up after themselves.

2. Sustain Machinery

In manufacturing the importance of making sure all machines are up to date and working order is astronomical. For maximum efficiency and safety schedule for trained professionals to check to make sure all your equipment is in working order.

3. Safety Sign

Have safety signs visible .   By making safety guidelines visible, it allows your employees to know and see every day what measures to take to make sure they are protected.

4. Use Machinery

Use mechanical help when available .   Instead of lifting something that is too heavy, see if there is a machine you can use to do the job. This will save you time and energy.

5. Talk it Out

If you have a safety concern, do not let it pass you by. Speak with your supervisor immediately. This could mean saving on workers compensation as well as potentially saving a life.

6. Reward Employees

When an employee is rewarded when they are following safety precautions in the workplace, they will continue to uphold their example. This model employee will begin to infect other employees and they too will become conscience of staying safe.

7. Investigate

When something happens, investigate it .  Unfortunately accidents will happen. When they do, take ample time to investigate the incident. Was it preventable? Was it the employee or employers fault? How can we prevent this from happening again? Looking towards the future will only benefit you.

8. Training

Train everyone -  Training your employees in proper safety measures is one of the first things you should do. Furthermore, you should set up regular times through the year to update and refresh employees on safety protocols.

9. Supervisor

Watch your employees -  Having a supervisor out on the manufacturing floor will make employees hyper sensitive to being safe. Also, a supervisor may find ways to improve the workplace by being out and immersing themselves in the work atmosphere.

10. First Aid

Have a first aid kit -  A first aid kit is something that is so simple that it is often overlooked. But having several first aid kits is a great way to help an injury until a trained professional arrives.

11. Drugs and Alcohol Policy

No tolerance policy -  Implement a no drug or alcohol policy. Around 3% of workplace accidents/deaths occur under the influence. Make sure that this is included in your employee handbook and that signs are posted around the workplace.
