Never Say These 6 Things to Younger Employees

Never Say These 6 Things to Younger Employees

Posted

There are some things that simply should just not ever be said in the workplace, such as the following for example. Specifically, these things shouldn't ever be said to younger employees. If you work in Human Resources, it's likely you're already aware of what to say and what not to say, so I encourage you to share these with your management team.

  1. How old are you? To some, asking what their age is can be quite offensive.
  2. You wouldn't understand — it's before your time. Who are you to judge what someone would and wouldn't understand?
  3. I need you to … get me coffee, have my dry cleaning taken care of, and confirm my dentist appointment. Just because someone is younger than you, don't ask he or she to run your errands. Doing so can make younger employees feel like their actual job does not matter.
  4. You didn't know that? It's because of your lack of experience. No one knows everything, so don't act like you do.
  5. You must be the new intern. If you're in HR, you'll know who the new interns are — other employees won't always. Just because someone looks young does not mean they are interning. Encourage your employees to be courteous and respectful to all employees, especially new employees who may be feeling nervous when they are first starting a new job.
  6. You remind me of my son or daughter. When you say this, it can be taken the wrong way. Some employees may feel that you view them as a child and not an equal to you in the workplace.

Are there any I missed? Head over to our Facebook page to share them.
