Why Large Organizations Turn to Temp-to-Hire

Temp-to-Hire has been a popular way for companies to hire entry level workers for over 35 years. It is when a hiring company asks a Staffing Company to find employees who are looking to be hired by that company. The employee is hired by the Staffing Firm to work at the Clients location. Then, after a period of time that is pre-negotiated, the worker becomes eligible for hire by the client with either no fee or a reduced fee paid to the Staffing Company.

Why It’s Beneficial to Companies

1. Decrease Costs

Because the Staffing Firm is the employer of record, companies do not pay for paid time off, recruitment costs, payroll, payroll taxes, worker’s compensation, or other benefits during the initial evaluation period. Additionally, any separation paperwork necessary is handled by them as well, thus reducing administrative burden on the company. Not only that, but it can decrease the amount of time and money spent training new employees.

2. Mitigate Risks

New workers are 3 times more likely to be injured on the job according to Safety and Health Magazine. If an employee of the Staffing firm is hurt on the job, it does go on the company’s OSHA 300 log, but the Staffing Service is responsible for the Worker’s Compensation Claim.

3. Manage Evaluation

Temp-to-Hire gives both the employee and the employer a chance to decide if they are right for each other prior to making a long-term commitment. Most employers use this period to filter out less committed employees.

4. Manage Turnover

High turnover positions are one of the largest costs to companies. Being able to manage the turnover by using temp-to-hire allows companies to decide whether or not the employee is adding value to their company. This allows you to avoid unnecessary turnover.

Why It’s Beneficial to Employees

1. Opportunities Galore

Temp-to-hire allows employees the opportunities to learn new skills and learn about the company itself. They are given time to decide whether or not this is a good workplace fit for themselves before making a long-term commitment to a company.

2. Expansion of Job Search

Being open to temp-to-hire placements can expand an employee's range, increasing the likelihood of employment. Not only that, but it improves their network of workplace associates. Additionally, they feel that they have an advocate in the recruiter, someone working with them directly to improve viability.

3. Resume Boosting

Having the ability to show that you have worked somewhere long enough on a temporary basis to be asked to go “full time” means that you have loyalty, are efficient and productive, and add value to a brand. All of these are immeasurably impressive and important on a resume.

4. Perspective

When trying to find the best career for yourself, you often need to try different things. A temp-to-hire position allows employees to decide whether or not this career is what they want or need for themselves, giving perspective and yielding growth.
