The Bird Takes Flight Again: Posting Job Ads on Twitter, Twitter Cards

Posted August 20 2014

Ten or fifteen years ago, who would have ever thought that there would a website that millions of people use everyday, with the logo of a bird? This little bird is tied to a powerful social media site. You know which one I'm talking about. Twitter. At Bear Staffing, we're always looking for new ways to get our open job listings out to jobseekers. Due to the popularity of Twitter, naturally, it has been something we've been dabbling in. I'm constantly seeing people advertising jobs, and we even posted a few of our own. What I'm curious to learn is whether or not posting jobs or utilizing Twitter advertising is effective.

Earlier this month, Twitter published an article on Twitter Cards. With Twitter Cards, users can “attach rich photos, videos, and media experiences to Tweets that drive traffic to their website.” Twitter users would do this by “adding a few lines of HTML to their webpage.” Doing so will generate a “Card” to their tweets in links to their content. The Card will be visible to all of the Twitter page's followers.

Twitter Cards help drive engagement from Tweets. Users can measure the results of their Cards in the Twitter Card Platform. The platform shows analytics including URL clicks, app install attempts, and Retweets.
Forbes published an article with several details on how companies are using Twitter Cards. It noted that they are using them to display:

  • Photo galleries
  • Short summaries
  • Large, attention grabbing images
  • App promotions
  • Embedded videos and podcasts
  • Products

To get started with Twitter Cards, I recommend getting some assistance from a web developer. Twitter Cards look promising and are something we plan on trying out as our Twitter following grows. Have you tried them yet? If so, I want to hear what your take is. Send me a Tweet on the Bear Staffing Twitter page
With or without Twitter Cards, I am convinced that Twitter can be an effective tool for recruiting. People are on it looking for jobs. I see it everyday. Just visit Twitter search and type in “need a job” or “looking for a job.”
We've learned a few things along the way, and here are a few tips to keep in mind when posting jobs on Twitter.

  • Use relevant hashtags such as #joblisting or #hiring.
  • Include a short summary of the job with a link for details.
  • Check your grammar!
