Stop Lying - Common Fibs Told by Job Applicants

Posted September 23 2013

So to job applicants who lie — are you kidding me?! I've been doing manufacturing staffing, admin staffing, and IT staffing (in particular) long enough that I can smell a liar a mile away. I've seen job applicants pull all kinds of stints, but guess what — they won't get anywhere with my recruiters and me. At Bear Staffing, we sniff out only the brightest and the most qualified truth-telling applicants we can get our hands on to meet your staffing needs. For kicks, here are some of the most common fibs I've seen told by job applicants.

  1. Denying criminal records. We have to ask job applicants about any criminal records they may have. In some cases, employers don't mind job applicants who have a criminal record. Background checks revel criminal records.
  2. Lying about past employment. In cases where job applicants have been out of work for long periods of time, they'll sometimes say they've been at past jobs longer then they actually have. Big gaps could mean the applicant is hiding time spent in jail. Note to jobseekers - if you find yourself having a difficult time finding work, volunteer. Seek out a local organization that's in need and while you continue to search for work, do something to give back. You can add any volunteer work on your resume. Doing so won't make gaps in employment look as bad. Be sure to specify the volunteer work as just that.
  3. Lying about job titles, salary, and job responsibilities. On several occasions, particularly when job applicants are applying for a position higher than positions they've held in the past, they will lie about their past job title(s), salary, and job responsibilities to make them look more qualified. When we run references, the truth comes out.
