Staffing Industry Facts Did You Know?

Posted October 8 2013

The staffing industry is a huge industry. Thousands of job seekers reach out to staffing firms each year for help finding a job. Just to give you a little more insight into the industry, I've compiled a few facts that I found pretty interesting.

The First Staffing Industry

I always wondered when the first staffing firm was founded and was never able to find an exact answer. In March, Staffing Daily published an article stating that the true origins of the staffing industry are under some debate. As noted in the article, one of the earliest claims of the first staffing company dates back to 1890. That's a very, very, long time ago!

What Attracts Job Seekers to Staffing Firms

Well, first and foremost, people go to a staffing firm because they need a job. Others go to a staffing firm to find flexible jobs, as the staffing industry offers desirable flexible work schedules.

According to statistics by the American Staffing Association:

  • 66 percent of staffing employees say flexible work time is important to them.
  • 64 percent of staffing employees report that their work gives them the scheduling flexibility and the time for family that they desire.

The Size of the Staffing Industry

According the American Staffing Association, as of 2007, there were 17,000 staffing firms in the United States. As of 2012, the industry generated approximately $117 billion in sales.
